Whole House Surge Protectors | Minnesota Electricians

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Whole house surge protectors are becoming more popular as people are opting to remodel older homes, instead of purchasing new ones. Older homes have a certain charm about them, and their locations are typically better suited that newer neighborhoods so this makes them attractive to a great many people. Those that have bought older homes understand that they will need to do some work on them, and are typically fine with the remodeling process.

What many of them are not aware of is that older homes will come with older wiring, too. When new home buyers purchase an older home, they typically start to upgrade all the appliances and fill the home with high tech gear.   Many people don’t realize that they could be better protecting their investments by purchasing a whole house surge protector.

Whole house surge protectors will bring with them an insurance policy to protect against any unusual spikes in electricity, so that if something should go wrong, your new appliances will still be protected one way or another.

Many homeowners will also simply replace the older 2-pronged plugs with a “grounded” 3-pronged plug, to accommodate their new items, but this alone won’t protect the item plugged into it. Before upgrading to 3 prong outlets, an electric panel check-up by a professional electrician will go a long way to give an up front idea as to the true scope of work.  Its not always as simple as swapping out the outlet.

No matter what is going on with a remodeling job, it is always a good idea to have an experienced and professional electrician come out and asses the home from top to bottom, in order to make sure it can handle all the creature comforts which we are accustomed to living with. For your personal inspection, give us a call at Edison Electric in Minneapolis, and find out about our current specials that will take care of you and your ‘soon- to-be’ new home.    612-385-7864

Warranties Require Electrical Grounding in Minnesota

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

A properly grounded building is very important for a number of reasons. First and foremost, grounding protects everyone in the building from an unpredictable electrical shock. A powerful electrical storm can rocket through a building with zero response time, and the only way to stop it is to redirect that energy with a proper ground.

Another big reason to ground your home is to protect your appliances. This list of appliances found in most every home all require at the least a grounded receptacle, if not a dedicated circuit. They are;

  1. Refrigerators
  2. Dishwashers
  3. Washing Machines
  4. Computers
  5. Televisions
  6. Any piece of equipment with a 3- pronged male-end plug

Unless these appliances are grounded, they will pose a shock hazard, and if surged upon, can become damaged without recourse. Computers in particular are sensitive to electric shock and surges.

Unlike electrical shocks from ungrounded plugs, surges are random spikes in the power flow that happen without notice. Every-time someone turns on an appliance, or makes a large draw on the system, this will offset the flow of electricity, an event known as a ‘surge’.

Surges are inevitable, they happen periodically throughout the day with few people even noticing them. However, if a large, unexpected surge happens to come your way, there is really no way to prepare for it other to have a properly installed surge protector. While surge protectors that are plugged into a standard outlet are OK for most items, unless that plug is grounded, the shock hazard still exists. Protecting your whole home is a more practical thing to do. A professionally grounded home will help prevent shock hazards; and a whole house surge protector will protect you from any rogue surges that might otherwise damage your appliances.

With Edison Electric, a Minneapolis based Commercial and residential electrical contractor, we are able to install a whole house surge protector, and perform inspections that will uncover each plug on your property is not properly grounded and protected from whatever electrical power surge that comes its way.

Plant A Tree In Minneapolis To Save Energy

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

While this sounds kind of hokey, trees actually make a big impact on a buildings energy use. They offer shade in the summer, and serve a wind breaker in the winter, both providing better insulation year round.

The MN Department of Commerce Energy Information Center has done studies on the benefits of using trees to help conserve energy, and their findings are a little surprising. They estimate that particular vegetation and their placement will provide as much as a 25% savings on summer air conditioning bills, and up to 20% on the end of year savings.

Neighborhoods that have tree canopies are not only beautiful to look, but also serve to keep the sun off streets and sidewalks, items that will trap heat and continue to radiate it long after the sun has gone down. In the winter when heat is needed, these same trees will have lost their leaves, and still allow the sun to shine through and help melt the winter’s snow and ice.

By lowering the temperature, trees will help prevent many pollutants to form, and those that do form, the trees will help process. Obviously, this will make the environment a cleaner and healthier place for everyone in it.

While the Land of 10,000 Lakes can be hot and sticky in the summers, Minnesotans will spend typically 10 % more for heating, than they do for cooling each year. This is believed to be the direct result of using landscaping to their advantage. Using these tactics, as well as several others to help reduce energy costs will not only benefit you directly, but will contribute to the world we all live in.

If you would like to know more about you can make some small changes that add up to big savings call Edison Electric Contractors in Minneapolis and let us help you design a custom plan for your energy needs. 612-385-7864

GFCI repair, electrician in MN

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

If you have an electric plug in your kitchen or bath that is on a counter top or near water, it is required  to be a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter).  A GFCI monitors the amount of current flowing from hot to neutral. If there is any imbalance, it trips the circuit.  As everyone knows- or should know- water and electricity don’t mix. If you happen to be working next to the kitchen sink, and reach up to turn on the disposal with a wet hand, a faulty plug can zap you.

This is the reason all plugs near a water source need to be a GFCI model. However, if they are not replaced correctly, they will represent shock protection which doesn’t exist. Correcting issues like these are very common in the electric remodeling business around Minneapolis. We at Edison Electric are often called out to repair simple items like this.

Most of these service calls are routine, anda good way to ensure that all of our friends and neighbors electric needs in and around Minneapolis are well taken care of. However,  all of our electricians are exceptionally trained, experienced and available 7 days a week for 24 hour service calls which may be more serious and require immediate attention. Electricity is such a large part of our daily lives, making sure your home is up to par is simple to do, and can be done quickly and easily by a trained professional, so give us a call and let us help you. 612-385-7864

Commercial Electrical Services Minneapolis, St Paul Metro

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Keeping your business open is not always an easy task. Especially with winter weather bringing its unpredictable face in and out of our lives. The draws and power surges experienced this time of year can be some of the strongest we experience all year long.

There are some things to know about commercial electric systems that are not always obvious to the untrained eye. To start with, many commercial buildings are older, so their electric panels and circuits were not originally designed to handle the higher amperage that we are running through them these days. Most older panels have circuits which have been incorrectly added onto over the years. Today’s new electronic devices may require a new 20amp circuit.

Another thing to remember is that electricity has had a various and sometimes sketchy past.  There was a time in the 70’s when aluminum wiring was used to help conserve costs. These wires are basically the equivalent to wiring a house with lamp cord. There is no way these poor conductors should be trusted to handle today’s typical draw.

Many times with wiring being older and buried underground, the simple effects of time and nature will take their toll on them as well. Hot and cold; wet and dry; it all takes a little bit of life out of an electrical system over time.

This doesn’t mean, however, that your commercial building necessarily has these issues. The only way to know for sure is to have one of our professional electricians come out to inspect your electrical system, or wait until something goes wrong. Unfortunately, most people wait until something goes wrong, if this happens, please contact us for our emergency electrical service. It will cost more time and money to get your building back up and running then, so it is better to have it checked out before the inevitable happens.

If your building is older than 25 years old, and you experience power surges, brown outs or tripped breakers, or any unusual sounds from behind the walls when you start up your equipment, it is probably a good idea to give us a call. ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Plus, you won’t have to pay extra for emergency service if you do the right thing beforehand. Edison’s Commercial Electricial Minneapolis Services,  are here for you.   651-587-5512
